The castles of Friuli Venezia Giulia open their doors

There are those places you look at from the outside and think: "I wonder what it’s like inside." That’s exactly what Open Castles is about: opening doors that are usually closed.

This event takes place twice a year - in spring and in autumn - when a selection of castles across Friuli Venezia Giulia opens to visitors.

Not only the ones that are already open to the public, but also private residences that you would normally only admire from the outside. Behind those gates you’ll find large gardens, ancient staircases and rooms full of history.

One of the most interesting parts is that sometimes you are welcomed directly by the owners - people who truly know these castles, room by room.

Among the castles you can visit, there’s one you can reach almost without thinking: Muggia Castle, about 20 minutes by car from Trieste. If you’d rather not drive, no problem - you can also get there by bus in about 50 minutes.

And the others? The remaining castles are spread across the provinces of Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone, a perfect excuse to leave Trieste for a day and discover new corners of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
